Unusual Large Call Buy in Alternative Fuels Leader

by | Nov 27, 2024

Clean Energy Fuels (CLNE) unusual action on 11/27 as 5000 January 2026 $4 calls bought to open at $0.55. CLNE monthly MACD is actually crossing bullish after being negative since October 2021.

CLNE is a leading renewable energy company focused on the procurement and distribution of renewable natural gas (RNG) and conventional natural gas, in the form of compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas for transportation markets. Commercial transportation, including heavy-duty trucking, generates a significant portion of the emissions of overall carbon dioxide and other climate-harming GHGs, and transitioning this sector to low and negative carbon fuels is a critical step towards reducing overall global GHG emissions.

The global RNG market is expected to grow from $14.03 billion in 2024 to $24.23 billion by 2031, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.1%. North America is projected to remain the dominant region, accounting for an estimated 36.7% share of the global market in 2024. There is increasing demand for carbon-negative RNG as an alternative fuel for heavy transport applications. RNG is becoming increasingly relevant for both decarbonization and energy security. The RNG industry continues to await final guidance on Section 45Z protection – production tax credit. This PTC, which begins in 2025, will play a role in supporting low carbon fuels.

CLNE has a market cap of $700M and trades 10.2X EBITDA and less than 3X Cash. CLNE beat estimates in its latest quarter with growing RNG fuel volumes, additional investment into dairy RNG projects, fueling stations coming online increasing our network in strategic locations, and leading heavy-duty truck fleets signing up to test the demo truck with the new Cummins X15N engine. CLNE is already seeing steady fuel volume from Amazon trucks, utilizing both time-fill posts, specifically built for them, as well as the publicly accessible fast-fill dispensers. Stations are in key locations in preparation for the future adoption of renewable natural gas fueling associated with Cummins X15N. Clean Energy’s new Peterbilt 579 day cab tractor equipped with an X15N was delivered to the first customer, J.B. Hunt, in September. CLNE believes truck orders and deployments will increase next year, which can drive additional fuel volumes at its stations in the second half of the year. In RNG production, CLNE has six operating projects, two projects under construction that are expected to come online in the second half of 2025 and other RNG projects in advanced development through its new partnership with Maas Energy. CLNE has identified locations in Georgia, Florida, New Mexico, Nebraska and South Dakota to construct RNG projects utilizing the covered lagoon method that Maas has perfected.
